ATLANTA – Georgia State student-athletes have continued to perform well in the classroom according to recent NCAA statistics. Figures for the Academic Progress Rate (APR) were released Tuesday and GSU had several teams far above the standard minimum threshold of 900.
Men's golf improved for the fourth consecutive year and led all Georgia State sports with a score of 992 during the most recent multiyear reporting period. Other Panther teams that topped 980 include softball (989), women's soccer (987), men's cross country (983), men's track (982) and women's tennis (981).
Men's basketball scored 955 – its third consecutive year above 945 – while the football program was included for the first time with a score of 948.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Teams can face sanctions such as scholarship losses and restriction on practice for falling below certain thresholds. Rates are based on the past four years' performance, and the most recent APR scores are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.
