ATLANTA - Astaja Tyghter, Makeba Ponder and Haley Gerrin scored 16, 15 and 12 points, respectively, in Georgia State’s 78-66 loss to Akron Tuesday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena. The game was the first of three contests at the GSU Holiday Classic featuring GSU, Akron and Elon.

Georgia State pulled within three points of Akron in the third quarter, but that would be as close as GSU would get as the Zips pulled away in the final 10 minutes. For Akron, it was Hannah Plybon and Megan Sefcik that did most of the damage. Plybon made four 3-pointers on the way to a 25-point performance. As a team, Akron made 11 baskets from long range and went 19-22 from the free throw line.

Georgia State’s top three scorers each came off the bench as the Panthers tallied 43 bench points. Tyghter (16) and Gerrin (12) each had season-highs and Ponder matched hers as she totaled 15 points for the second game in a row. After hitting five 3-pointers in the first eight games, Ponder has now made 10 over the last two.

Georgia State was a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line and shot above 50% from the field in the second half. Tiffany Holston led the team with seven rebounds and Jaylyn Harrison recorded seven assists to go with her five rebounds.

Akron and Elon play Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Game 2 of the Holiday Classic before Georgia State and Elon meet in the finale on Thursday at 1 p.m.
