ATLANTA - Freshman Jada Lewis scored a career-high 21 points Thursday, but it wasn’t enough to lead Georgia State past Elon. The Phoenix won 84-67 to go 2-0 at the GSU Holiday Classic as the Panthers fell to 4-7 on the season.

Georgia State got off to a sluggish start and found themselves in a 27-7 hole after the first quarter. GSU would rally in the second quarter to cut the Elon lead to single digits, but the Phoenix held on to pull away in the second half.

Sophomore K.K. Williams grabbed a career-high eight rebounds and added 13 points while junior Makeba Ponder also scored 13. Ponder was named to the All-Classic Team for her performances against Elon and Akron. She lead GSU with 28 points over the two contests and finished with five rebounds, two steals and seven assists.

True freshman Shaquanda Miller-McCray was inserted into the lineup when GSU fell into foul trouble in the first half. Entering the game, Miller-McCray had just two points in 11 minutes on the season, but she put in a strong effort Thursday and tallied seven points and six rebounds in 21 minutes.

Georgia State (4-7) begins conference play on Dec. 31 at rival Georgia Southern. The two sides split last year’s pair of games. Tipoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.
