* Georgia State beat Georgia Southern 58-54 Saturday to open Sun Belt play.

STATESBORO, Ga. - On her birthday, Tiffany Holston recorded her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing 17 rebounds to lead Georgia State to a 58-54 win over rival Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt opener.

Georgia State trailed by 11 points at halftime, but used an 18-2 run to open the second half. Georgia Southern bounced back in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers would hold on thanks to 12 second-half points from Astaja Tyghter and 11 second-half points from Makeba Ponder.

For the game, Tyghter and Ponder each finished with 16 points to lead GSU. The Panthers 18 points off 12 turnovers and tallied seven blocks and seven steals.

Last season, it was Astaja Tyghter playing on her birthday and scoring a career-best 21 points in Statesboro as GSU defeated Georgia Southern on Feb. 22. Today, it was Holston’s birthday and she didn’t disappoint. Her 17 rebounds not only set a new season-high, but also put her over the 1,000-rebound mark for her career including three seasons at D-II Albany State.

Georgia State (5-7, 1-0 SBC) continues conference play on Thursday against Troy in the GSU Sports Arena.
