CHATTANOOGA, TN- Georgia State opened up the Scenic City Showdown with a win Friday afternoon. The Panthers beat Jackson State three sets to one (27-29, 25-14, 25-14, 25-9), improving the team’s overall record to 3-5.

 GSU trailed early in the first set, but battled back to tie the set at 25. Jackson State would pull away to win the frame 29-27. The Panthers came out hot to start the second set, winning the first six points and eventually opening up a 17-5 lead. Georgia State would roll to 25-14 wins in sets two and three before shutting the door on Jackson State 25-9 in set number four.

“I am proud of the effort and the persistence that we showed throughout the match”, said head coach Sally Polhamus. “We were able to make adjustments and got incredible play from our middle blockers, they were our go to players.”

Junior setter, Sarah Renner had plenty of targets, doling out 40 assists. Middle blocker Jha’Meisheia Griffin finished the match with a career high 12 kills. Fellow middle, Katie Creger added eight kills and had a .471 hit percentage. Crystal Lee racked up 11 kills and 15 digs for her second double-double on the season, and Sydney Stroud added 12 kills of her own.

The Panthers look to keep the momentum rolling in a pair of matches tomorrow. GSU will take on SIU-Edwardsville at 10:00 a.m. and close out the tournament at 7:00 p.m. against Chattanooga.
