ATLANTA- Georgia State volleyball fell to Louisiana in three sets (21-25, 21-,25, 21-25) Saturday night at the GSU Sports Arena. The Panthers are now 7-8 on the season and an even 1-1 in Sun Belt play.
The teams battled early in the first set with no team taking clear control. The Ragin’ Cajuns would eventually find some separation and pull out to a 15-10 lead. A 5-0 from GSU would tie the set at 18. A few points later, an ace by Savian Jordan would make the score 20-19, giving the Panthers their first lead of the set. Louisiana would rally back with a 5-0 run of their own and go on to win the set 25-21.
A 6-0 Georgia State run early in set number two would give GSU a 7-3 lead. The teams would exchange mini-runs throughout the set, but five straight points by Louisiana would give the Cajuns a 20-15 advantage. They would ride that momentum to a 25-21 win.
The third set would see the two teams battle back and forth with neither team able to pull away. The score was tied at 17 when Louisiana rattled off four straight points for a 21-17 lead. The Panthers’ comeback attempt would fall short as the Ragin’ Cajuns would close out the match with a 25-21 third set win.
Despite the loss Georgia State got excellent production from their middle blockers. “Our Middles were a bright spot for us out there tonight”, said coach Sally Polhamus. “Jha’Meisheia and Katie hit their spots and that shows in the stat sheet”. Jha’Meisheia Griffin hit .571 for the match with 12 kills, while Katie Creger added four kills with a .477 hitting percentage and two blocks.
The Panthers are on the road next weekend for a pair of matches in the Yellowhammer State. Georgia State will take on South Alabama Friday, and battle Troy on Saturday night. Both matches have a 7:30 p.m. Eastern start time.
