CONWAY, SC- Georgia State volleyball dropped a heartbreaking five-set match (19-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-21, 10-15) to Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon. The win propelled the Chanticleers to 5-1 in the Sun Belt. Georgia State is now 2-4 in conference play.
The Panthers hung around early in the first set, but a 6-1 run by Coastal would give CCU a lead they would not surrender. The Panthers came out of the gate hot in the second set, surging to a 10-3 lead. GSU would push the lead to eleven at 19-8, and cruise to a set two win.
The Chanticleers would lead the third set wire to wire, however, Georgia State continued to battle. The fourth set was a back and forth affair, but a late kill by Shae Chapman gave the Panthers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Coastal Carolina would settle in and control the fifth set in route to a five-set win.
Fourteen Panthers played in the match, the most in any match this season. Sarah Renner (27) and Carley Eiken (11) each had double digit assists in the loss. Celeste Friesen (36) and Crystal Lee (12) both totaled double digit digs. Morgan Hash’s nine kills were a team high. Shae Chapman had eight kills in just four sets of action, and Madelyn Ott hit .333 on her way to four kills.
The Panthers are back at the GSU Sports arena for a pair of Sun Belt matches next weekend. Georgia State will host Troy Friday night, and South Alabama on Saturday. Both matches are set for 6:00 p.m. starts.
