GEORGIA STATE HEAD COACH SHAWN ELLIOTT
“It’s a great Thursday night here at Georgia State Stadium. First win in this stadium feels great, but we sure do make it interesting, don’t we? Man, we really do.
“Let me just say our defense played a phenomenal football game, they really did. They had them on their heels all game long. Our secondary, our linebackers, our defensive front, just made plays all night. Hate to see that throw there at the end. And we can’t let that happen.
“Offensively we did enough to go out there and put points on the board to make it stand and fought very hard. South Alabama is a well-coached football team, and they came in knowing exactly what we did. We’re both 2-1 in the conference, and we pretty much just eliminated them. We were able to fight and outlast them.
“I told our team in there, everything that we want to accomplish, everything that we’ve set as our goals- we haven’t set a lot of goals- they’re all obtainable. We still get to move forward, we strive to be where we want to be, but we’ve got to clean a lot of stuff up.
“I mentioned to our guys a little bit in there, I said, we’re capable of making big plays, but when we do that, we need to understand how to act. That penalty there on the interception, that was one of the most foolish things I’ve seen, it made me more upset just thinking about that, and how it affected the outcome of the game. We had to fight there at the end, and we should’ve had points on the board, and been able to kind of make them spit the bit out, so to speak, right there at the end. But it didn’t happen, we didn’t handle the success with that interception, we acted a little out of character, but we’re going to get that corrected.
S BRYAN WILLIAMS
Q: You are the first 6th year senior in Georgia State History, as a leader what has your mindset been going into these games playing at a high level?
A: First I want to thank God. Besides that, it’s just making sure our team is ready. Especially coming off a short week, we just played Saturday and now this game on Thursday, just making sure the guys are level headed. This is a big season for us, were playing good right now. We are doing good in the Sun Belt. We just have to know that today, we can celebrate but tomorrow its on to next weeks game. We have to keep the guys motivated and playing with a chip on our shoulder.
SOUTH ALABAMA HEAD COACH JOEY JONES
"It was a case where they got the momentum with the first interception of the game, scored the touchdown, and we never got it back. We never really did anything to flip it back in our favor for the rest of the game. We just have to learn from this because in the last two weeks we took the momentum from the teams and held them.”
“It’s part of the life in the Sun Belt, and I do want to congratulate Georgia State. They came out and played a really good game. They had good defense, played hard, and made some plays; hats off to them. As for us going forward, we just have to stand up and get back to work. This was a game where we knew it was going to be a tough game. We understand we need to make plays on the road and win ball games, and we didn’t get it done (tonight). So, we just need to get ready for the next game.”
