ATLANTA- Sophomore Celeste Friesen etched her name into the Georgia State record books halfway through the third set of Georgia State’s match against Coastal Carolina. The libero from Marietta recorded her 18th dig on the evening, which would be the 500th in her dig on the season. Friesen is now one of five Panthers to reach the 500-dig mark in a single season. GSU was unable to provide a win to go along with the milestone, falling to Coastal Carolina in three sets (25-18, 25-14, 25-14).
Georgia State found themselves down early in the first set. A timeout would spur a 4-0 GSU run to cut into the Coastal Carolina lead, but the Chanticleers would hold on and take the opening frame.
Coastal attainted an early lead via a 6-1 scoring run. GSU would cut into the lead, but a 5-0 Chanticleer would propel CCU to a 25-14 win. A pair of 4-0 runs by Coastal would again be the undoing of the Panthers who would drop the third set and the match.
Friesen finished the match with 22 digs for a 7.33 digs per set average. Carley Eiken and Paige Etherington both provided double digit kills, and Katie Creger had four kills while hitting .300 on the match.
The Panthers will look to bounce back tomorrow as they host Appalachian State. The match is at the GSU Sports Arena and is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start time.
