ATLANTA – Georgia State’s women’s basketball team overcame a 16-point deficit Thursday, but ultimately lost 81-76 to UT Arlington in overtime at the GSU Sports Arena.
Madison Newby scored a career-high 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting and also recorded a double-double as she totaled 12 assists. Janessa Murphy finished with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists and K.K. Williams also ended up in double-figures with 14 points.
As a team, the Panthers shot 47% from the field, but were out-rebounded by the Mavericks 43-28. UTA’s Rebekah VanDijk finished with 27 points and 17 rebounds.
Georgia State trailed the entire first half, going into halftime down 47-32. The Panthers then doubled up the Mavericks 18-9 in the third quarter before taking its first lead of the game with 5:33 to go in the fourth quarter. Georgia State trailed by as many as 16 points before pulling all the way back.
With the game tied 70-70, Georgia State missed a free throw with just seconds left and UTA missed a shot at the buzzer as the game headed to overtime.
UT Arlington outscored GSU 11-6 in overtime to win 81-76.
Georgia State fell to 5-14 on the year and 1-7 in the Sun Belt. The Mavericks improved to 11-9 and 5-4 in the conference.
The Panthers will host Texas State Saturday at noon in the GSU Sports Arena on ESPN3.
