LAFAYETTE, La. – Georgia State rallied from an early deficit to defeat South Alabama 8-3 at the Sun Belt Championship Wednesday. The Panthers will next play Louisiana Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
South Alabama struck early with two runs on three hits in the top of the first. Kinsley Jennings was brought on in relief and escaped the jam with the bases loaded.
After Ivie Drake and Kirsten McMonigle started off the bottom half with back-to-back walks, Megan Litumbe lined a ball into right field to score Drake from second. The right fielder booted the ball, allowing McMonigle to come all the way around from first to even the score at 2-2.
South Alabama pulled back in front in the top of the second on a solo home run by Brittani Reid.
Georgia State responded in the bottom of the third with an Ivie Drake leadoff walk to get things started for GSU. With the bases loaded, Reagan Morgan singled to third base to score Drake from third and Litumbe, who doubled to reach base, beat the tag at third to keep the bases full with one out.
With the score tied at 3-3, Skylar Mosel then lined a single into center field to score a pair and give GSU’s its first lead of the game at 5-3.
GSU then made it 6-3 on a bunt single by Kristin Hawkins.
South Alabama walked Drake for the third time to lead off the bottom of the fourth and Kirsten McMonigle made them pay, belting a two-run dinger to right field to make it 8-3.
Jennings shut down the Jaguar offense over the final frames to secure the win for the Panthers. She moved to 13-11 with the win after throwing 6.1 innings and striking out five while allowing just one earned on four hits.
No. 3-seeded Georgia State advances to face No. 2 seed Louisiana Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
