Rice got off to a hot start, making 69% of their shots from the field in the first half. The Owls used a 13-1 run in the first quarter and a second 13-1 run in the second quarter to pull away.
Georgia State played much stronger defense in the second half, but Rice was able to fend off multiple GSU runs and keep the Panthers at a distance.
Rice shot 28% in the second half as the Panthers stepped up the energy on the defensive end. Georgia State held the Owls to only eight points in the third quarter.
The Owls, picked to finish second in the C-USA Preseason Poll, got 17 points from Lauren Grigsby to hand Georgia State their first loss of the season. Entering the game, GSU was one of two undefeated teams remaining in the Sun Belt.
Next up for the Panthers is a trip to Murfreesboro, Tenn., the hometown of senior K.K. Williams. GSU will face MTSU on Nov. 29 at noon ET. The Blue Raiders were picked to finish first in the C-USA ahead of Rice. That contest will mark GSU's fourth straight game on the road and fourth straight against a C-USA opponent. The Panthers defeated FAU and FIU to start the stretch.
