Feb. 21, 2002 – In this final regular season game, the men needed a win on Senior Night to earn the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament. Against tough Belmont and Coach Rick Byrd, GSU found itself down nine points at the half. But, super sophomore Lamont McIntosh provided the heroics with a running jumper with 1.2 seconds left to provide a 71-69 win as the 3,296 fans in the Sports Arena went wild and soon rushed the court. McIntosh finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds. As fate would have it, GSU and Belmont were matched in the conference tournament one week later. Again, GSU hung on for an 82-79 win in that tournament game to advance to the semifinals. GSU finished with a 20-win season, but lost the Atlantic Sun Sonference championship game by a one point and accepted the NIT bid a few days later. This season gave GSU back-to-back 20-win seasons and 49 wins over the two years.
