March 5, 1991 – The road to GSU’s
first-ever NCAA Tournament berth started on this day in DeLand, Fla. The No.
5-seed Panthers drew No. 4-seed Stetson on its home floor in the opening round,
having lost to Stetson twice during the regular season. Not many gave the 13-14
Panthers a chance to win this game, let alone go on and win three Trans America
Athletic Conference games and earn the NCAA tournament bid. On this day, Georgia State shot 52.2% to
surprise the host Hatters and claim a 70-64 upset. Guard Phillip Luckydo led
the scoring parade with 26 points, while forward Chris Collier added 18 more
points to the offense as both were iron-men and played all 40 minutes in the
thrilling GSU win. GSU would go on to beat No. 1 seed UTSA the next day and
then UALR in the title game to earn the school’s first NCAA bid.
