ATLANTA--The Georgia State men's soccer team looks forward to its regular-season opener in less than a week after it wrapped up its preseason with a 1-0 victory against Southern Poly Saturday night at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Senior Alex Vivanco's goal in the 29th minute was the eventual game winner as redshirt sophomore CJ Cochran and freshman Tyler Prince combined for the clean sheet. Vivanco collected a bouncing ball on the left side from just less than 30 yards out and uncorked a rocket, right-footed shot that clipped the crossbar and fell into the net.
Cochran and Prince were reliable when called upon. Cochran's sprawling save on a breakaway in the 31st minute and Prince's leaping save in the 80th minute on a header directed into the upper part of the net highlighted their efforts.
Shots were even at 12 for the match and GSU held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Peter Kurowski was GSU's leader in shots with three.
The Panthers travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to kick-off their regular-season next weekend with two matches. GSU opens the year with a match against Jacksonville University on Friday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. and bounces back to take on North Florida at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26.
