GEORGIA STATE-GEORGIA SOUTHERN SERIES HISTORY
Georgia State and Georgia Southern are certainly in the same state, but are 200 miles apart with Georgia Southern being located in Stateboro in southeastern Georgia, close to Savannah.
The teams have met 35 times previously, but this will be the first time "this century" the teams have met. It was 15 seasons ago that the teams played on Dec. 5, 1998. So, most of the players on today's rosters were just thinking about entering grade school at that time.
Georgia State won that last game, 79-64, that was here in the GSU Sports Arena. In an unusual twist, that game's leading scorer for the Panthers was Christine James, a transfer who had spent one season at Georgia Southern. James had 26 points and 14 rebounds against her former team.
The previous meeting for 1998-99 was in 1994-95 (Dec. 13, '95), when visiting Georgia Southern beat Georgia State, 76-70.
The first-ever game in the series was in 1977-78 when Georgia State topped the Eagles, 75-60.
Tickets are just $5 each day and includes both games. Parking is right next door in the G Parking Deck off either Collins Street or Central Avenue. The Sports Arena is located at 125 Decatur Street at the intersection of Piedmont Ave. It is one block from the Georgia State capitol with easy access to I-75-85 at ML King Drive.
