The Georgia State women's basketball team (7-2) will play host to a strong field in the upcoming Dec. 29-30 Holiday & Hoops Tournament at the GSU Sports Arena.
Leading the four-team field is Toledo from the MAC. The 10-1 Rockets are No. 19 in the RPI rankings, receiving votes in the AP National rankings and sitting at No. 6 in the national Mid-Major Poll. Toledo has a 106-41 (72%) record the past four-plus years under Coach Tricia Cullop, a former Purdue player. Toledo won the NIT national championship two years ago witha 29-8 record and followed that up last year with a 24-10 mark and another postseason bid.
A team with 10 consecutive postseason appearances, Charlotte, is eyeing to make that 11 straight with its 8-2 start this season. The 49ers returned all five starters and nine letterwinners from last year's WNIT team. Charlotte plays in the rugged Atlantic-10 Conference. They are coached by former WNBA player and Iowa star, Cara Consuegra.
The Devilettes from Mississippi Valley State always play a challenging non-conference slate. MVSU has gotten early-season experience by playing Arkansas, Ole Miss, Kansas State, Dayton and UAB. While MVSU is 3-6, the difference from being 6-3 is miniscule as the Devilettes lost games by two points (Ole Miss), three points (Nicholls State) and seven points (Kansas State). First-year coach Nate Robinson is building off last year's 18-win team.
Host Georgia State has started 7-2 or better only six other times in its 38-year school history. The up-tempo Panthers are among the top 25 teams in the nation in multiple defensive categories. GSU also leads the CAA in scoring in the non-conference portion of the season. Third-year GSU head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener has the Panther program on the rise.
