ATLANTA — Katharine Showalter has been named the Sun Belt women’s Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.

Showalter won two events at the UAB Blazer Invite on Jan. 10-11, including the 5,000m race during the first day of competition. Her 5K time of 17:50.54 set a new meet, facility and personal record. This mark is also the best time in the conference thus far in the season. Four other Panthers finished in the top-8 competitors of the event.

Then on the final day of the meet, Showalter finished first in the 3,000m in another personal best time of 10:14.68. This mark now stands as the third-best time in the event in the conference in 2013. Georgia State had four other runners in the event that placed in the top-7.

During the cross country season, Showalter was named the Sun Belt women’s Runner of the Week a total of five times. She went on to capture the individual conference title and lead GSU to its first Sun Belt team crown.

Showalter earned one CAA Track Athlete of the Week honors during the 2012 season. At last year’s CAA outdoor track and field championships, she won the 3,000m steeplechase and finished second in the 1,500m.

The Georgia State track and field team travels to Johnson City, Tenn. for the Niswonger Invite this Friday.
