ODU and GEORGIA STATE TO MEET FOR FINAL TIME

Georgia State’s women’s team will head to Norfolk for a final time in hopes of leaving on a high note like the GSU men’s team did on Saturday with a win. But, it is a usual tall order to win in Norfolk with ODU’s rich history.

Old Dominion (12-5) has won three of its five CAA games, starting with a 72-66 win in Atlanta on Jan. 2 and most recently with an 83-72 loss at Hofstra Sunday.

GSU heads off to the Sun Belt for its football at FBS next year and ODU joins the Conference USA teams with its football program.

Memories of the Jan. 2 ODU-GSU game probably still give GSU head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener nightmares as the Panthers had a 20-point lead at 50-30 with 13 minutes to play and an 11-point lead with 8 and a half minutes. It was a one-point game with 47.8 seconds left when ODU’s basket with 23 seconds made it a three-point game.

As always, the game will be broadcast live on 100,000-watt WRAS-FM (88.5) radio with Panther play-by-play announcer Wade Smith.

GEORGIA STATE-OLD DOMINION SERIES HISTORY

Old Dominion won last year’s games 68-59 and 71-60 and then this year’s Jan. 2 game in the 72-66 comeback win. Georgia State’s only win came in Atlanta on Jan. 29, 2009 by a 75-62 margin.

A QUICK LOOK AT OLD DOMINION

Located in Norfolk, Va., Old Dominion is under the guidance of second-year head coach Karen Barefoot, a former ODU assistant. Barefoot has already passed last year’s win total (11-21) in her first year at the helm. She replaced legendary Wendy Larry, who abruptly resigned in May of 2011 after 24 years and 559 wins. ODU won 17 straight conference titles and NCAA bids under Coach Larry.

The Monarchs have used their defensive pressure to force turnovers and their bench to stay fresh. A pair of freshmen have earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors coming in as reserves.

BALANCE HAS BEEN AN ASSET

Georgia State has used all 10 players who dress out on a regular basis throughout the season.

• All 10 have played 193 or more minutes and all averaged more than 12.9 minutes a game.

• All 10 have scored at least 9 or more points in a game.

• Eight of the 10 have scored in double figures, four different ones have scored 15 or more points in a game.

• Four different players already have had a double-figure rebound game.

• Eight of the 10 are averaging 4.2 or more points a game. All 10 have scored 43 or more on the season.

• Nine of the 10 have 5 or more assists; All 10 have already blocked a shot.

DEFENSE HAS BEEN KEY TO GEORGIA STATE WINS

Georgia State s 9-7 start is primarily a credit to the defensive efforts. This season is only the seventh time of the Panthers’ 38-season history that they had started by winning 8 of its first 10 games.

GSU’s defense has held eight of the 16 opponents under 50 points this season and allow just 58 points a game despite forcing an up-tempo, fast-paced game.

If one wants to know primarily why GSU is winning, just look at the national NCAA rankings of the 345 Division I teams on Monday, Jan. 21 and one will see the impact the Panthers’ aggressiveness is having:

• No. 16 in the NCAA in 3-point field goal defense (.254)

• No. 32 in the NCAA in all field goal defense (.346)

• No. 62 in the NCAA in blocked shots per game (4.3)

• No. 64 in the NCAA in rebound margin (+4.6)

• No. 75 in the NCAA in steals per game (10.5)

• No. 99 in the NCAA in points allowed (58.3)
