March 6, 2003 – In the A-Sun conference
tournament, the No. 7-seed Panthers upset No. 2-seed Belmont, 76-58, to move on
to the semifinals of the tournament for a sixth consecutive season. This fun
day saw GSU shoot a remarkable 68 percent in the second half and 62 percent for
the entire game, making 28-of-45 shots. Six-foot-11 center Nate Williams and
guard Leroy Davis each scored 18 points in the win. Defensively, GSU was
dominant in holding down the Bruins as the Panthers blocked 11 Belmont shots
and made seven steals. Forward Trello Galloway was GSU’s defensive catalyst
with six blocks and three steals. This upset evened GSU’s record at 14-14 and
set up a re-match with Troy.
March 6, 1998 - The women’s team upset
No. 2 seed UCF in the TAAC Tournament in Miami, 92-76. TAAC Newcomer of the
Year, freshman Leslie McElrath lived up to that recognition with this 30-point,
14-rebound game to up GSU’s mark to 17-10 and send them to the title game
against No. 11 nationally ranked FIU.In
the 92-point explosion, GSU had three players score 20 or more points as
Montrine Thomas added 24 points and Chris James 21 points to the win. James
almost had a 20-20 game as she also pulled down a career-best 19 rebounds.
