ATLANTA – Georgia State freshman pitcher Garrett Ford was honored as Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Co-Rookie of the Week after throwing eight scoreless innings in a combined shutout of Northeastern, giving the Panthers four straight Rookie award winners and seven in 11 weeks this season.

Ford, a left-hander from Loganville, Ga., earned his second Rookie of the Week honor, joining three other Panthers to be recognized this season: center fielder Josh Merrigan, who has won the award three times, pitcher-infielder Matt Rose and starting pitcher Nathan Bates.

Ford allowed just four hits—all singles--and walked none while striking out four in eight innings in Saturday’s 6-0 victory at Northeastern. He needed just 95 pitches to record 24 outs, combining with reliever Jerry Stuckey for the Panthers’ second shutout of the season.

Ford worked out of jams in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the shutout intact. In the fifth, the Huskies put runners at first and second with no outs after an error and a single, but Ford got a groundout, a strikeout and a pop up to end the threat.

One inning later, Northeastern put runners at first and second with two outs, but Ford picked off Connor Lyons at second base for the third out.

Ford shares this week’s award with Northeastern freshman pitcher James Mulry, who threw seven shutout innings against the Panthers on Friday.

Ford has been the Panthers’ Saturday starter all season long, and he leads the team in innings pitched with 63-2/3. He has a 4-3 record and a 4.95 ERA for the season.

Earlier this spring, he earned his first Rookie of the Week award on March 18 after he took a shutout into the ninth inning in a 12-3 victory over George Mason.

The 2012 Georgia Class AAAA Pitcher of the Year by the Georgia Dugout Club, Ford helped Loganville High School to a state championship and No. 20 national ranking last spring. He was also an all-region quarterback for the Loganville football team.
