As preparations for Georgia State's baseball season opener at #6/#7 Florida State continue, several publications unveiled their preseason rankings over the weekend. Topping the list was senior pitcher Ryan Moore who was named the best pitcher in the CAA by Rivals.com.
Coming off of its most successful season in school history that included a school record for wins with 39, first CAA Championship and NCAA Regional appearance, several publications have shown State a great deal of respect entering for the program entering the 2010 season.
Rivals.com released its preseason rankings on Monday, predicting Georgia State to finish third in the league, which would once again qualify the Panthers for the CAA Championship to be held in Wilmington, N.C. in May.
Moore was named the best pitcher in the league, who is coming off a fantastic junior campaign. He made 13 starts and appeared in 16 games last season. He had a 7-2 record and compiled a 4.41 ERA in 85 2 2/3 innings. He also struck out 64 and walked just 29, limiting opposing teams to a .259 batting average.
SEBaseball.com also unveiled their rankings for the season over the weekend and will make its conference preview later in the week.
Georgia State was ranked 16th in the "Non Big Three Top 25." The teams included in the poll are schools not in the SEC, ACC and Conference USA. It replaces the Mid-Major Top 25 that the website did last season. The Panthers finished 24th in the poll last season.
SEBaseball.com also unveiled its southeastern top 80 teams with the Panthers ranking 42nd of the 80 teams. The site claims "The Panthers lost a lot from last year's Regional club, but their newcomers make this team their most talented."
Earlier this preseason, sophomore Justin Malone was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List.
Georgia State is also receiving votes in the Collegiate Baseball Preseason Fabulous Top 40 Poll for the first time in school history.
The Panthers will open the season at #7 Florida State on February 19th at 4 p.m. in Tallahassee. The home opener against USC-Upstate comes on February 23rd, also at 4 p.m.
