Long-time Georgia State broadcaster has completed his seven-year project of publishing a book called Matzoh Balls and Baseballs. He will be at an Autograph Signing Sunday, Sept. 19 at Tall Tales Book Shop, in Toco Hills Shopping Center at North Druid Hills at LaVista, from 2-4 p.m.
Cohen is featured in the current issue of Baseball Digest. Click here to read.
The book features 17 interviews with Jewish former Major League Baseball players and their careers. Among those included:
• Ron Blomberg (Yankees and White Sox) who was baseball's first Designated Hitter and who was the overall number one draft pick in the 1967 MLB Amateur Draft.
• Ken Holtzman (Cubs, Athletics, Orioles, Yankees) who as a pitcher with the A's in the early '70's was a part of three World Series championship teams. He threw two no-hitters during his career.
• Steve Stone (Giants, White Sox, Cubs, Orioles) The only other Jewish pitcher besides Sandy Koufax to win a Cy Young Award
• Mike Epstein (Orioles, Senators, Athletics, Rangers, Angels) who was a member of the 1964 US Olympic baseball team that won the Gold Medal in Tokyo. He was a member of the 1972 World Series Champion A's.
• Al Rosen (Indians) In 1953 Rosen led the American League in home runs (43), runs batted in (145), runs (115), slugging percentage (.613), and total bases (367). He was third in hits (201) and tied for 8th with Mickey Mantle in stolen bases. He batted .336, and missed winning the batting title (and with it, the Triple Crown) on the last day of the season—by only 1 percentage point, coming in second to Mickey Vernon of the Washington Senators.
"As a Jewish guy, I was interested in their careers, accomplishments and stories," Cohen said. "So, I started trying to track them down and learn more about the stories they had to tell. I hope to be able to continue these and do another book later as well."
