ATLANTA--Georgia State women's tennis player Whitney Byrd earned the Colonial Athletic Association women's tennis Player of the Week award on Tuesday.

It is the first award for the junior, playing in her first season with GSU (7-5) after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. Byrd, an Atlanta native, transferred to Georgia State from NAIA women's tennis power Auburn-Montgomery where she was a second-team NAIA All-American in 2010.

Byrd was one of the bright spots in No. 66 GSU's narrow 4-3 loss at No. 35 South Carolina last Saturday. She won a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2 match against South Carolina sophomore Dominika Kanakova in the No. 3 singles match. The win was Byrd's third-straight victory as she improved her mark this year to 7-5 in singles matches.

This season, Byrd provided an important match-clinching win in GSU's 4-3 victory over No. 43 William & Mary on Jan. 28. She defeated Anik Cepeda 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to clinch the Georgia State victory.

Byrd, a journalism major, is chronicling the Georgia State women's tennis season in her blog, "Byrd's Eye View."

The Panthers, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Miha Lisac, face Kennesaw State (6-5) at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center on Wednesday in their next match. Visit the women's tennis page on Wednesday for links to live stats and a live chat from the match.
