ATLANTA--The No. 74-ranked Georgia State women's tennis team benefitted from strong doubles play Friday afternoon, but couldn't take control of the match in singles and fell 4-3 at No. 50 VCU.

Georgia State (8-6) won the doubles point with victories in the No. 1 and 2 slots. Sophomore Abigail Tere-Apisah and senior Tereza Lerova defeated VCU's Alex and Ana Bara 8-5 at the No. 1 position. That victory tied up doubles play, which left GSU junior Whitney Byrd and sophomore Maryna Kozachenko battling for the point in the No. 2 slot against VCU's Olga Terteac and Daria Yakalueva.

Byrd and Kozachenko won their match in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-5), to secure the doubles point. The duo improved to 4-1 this season.

Tere-Apisah carried the momentum from doubles play into singles by quickly dispatching Ana Bara 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 position. It was the Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea native's 13th win on the season and her ninth straight-set victory.

Holding a 2-0 lead, Georgia State couldn't find an answer for the Rams (12-4) who charged back with four straight singles wins. Kozachenko closed the match with a hard-fought 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) win at the No. 4 position vs. VCU freshman Alena Gerasimova.

Georgia State, led by fifth-year head coach Miha Lisac, has one match remaining before it travels to Norfolk, Va., for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on Apr. 19. The Panthers hit the road for Tampa, Fla., to take on No. 36-ranked South Florida on Apr. 8 (10 a.m.).
