ATLANTA--The Georgia State men's soccer team continues preseason preparations for the 2012 regular-season with a home exhibition match against Southern Poly on Saturday (7 p.m.).
All Georgia State home matches at the GSU Soccer Complex are free for all fans to attend. This Saturday's matchup will be GSU's final scrimmage before its regular-season opener on Aug. 24.
The Panthers return to the field after a week of training following their first exhibition match at South Carolina on Tuesday. 18 players saw the field for GSU in the 6-3 loss at Conference-USA favorites USC. The Panthers received three goals from redshirt junior Caleb Kernan, senior Peter Vania and senior Gimel Gordon. Assisting on those goals were redshirt junior Michael Nwiloh, sophomore Bo Stroup and sophomore Peter Kurowski.
Saturday's exhibition match caps an active preseason for the Panthers as they travelled nearly 300 miles south for their preseason training camp at the Jekyll Island Soccer Complex prior to the exhibition match against the Gamecocks. The preseason session stressed fitness and fundamentals as head coach Brett Surrency and his staff welcomed six newcomers to a group of eight seniors and nine returning starters. Georgia State is a week away from regular-season action with its first match taking place next Friday at Surrency's alma mater Jackonsville University at 7 p.m.
Georgia State and Southern Poly are meeting for the second time this year in exhibition play. The Panthers triumphed 3-0 over the Hornets on Saturday, Mar. 31, as part of the Metro Atlanta Cup hosted at the GSU Soccer Complex.
