Statesboro, Ga.--Georgia State senior
Victor Valente took the singles title in the Blue Draw with a 6-7, 7-5, 1-0
(10-6) victory over teammate Robert Schulze in the finals to lead the men's
tennis team at the Georgia Southern Championships this weekend.
The
Panthers won 21 matches and dropped just one against competition from other
schools on the weekend. Senior Lucas Santa Ana took home the White Draw singles
title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the finals against Georgia Southern's Marco
Osorio. Schulze teamed with sophomore Sofiane Chevallier to win the Main Draw
doubles title with an 8-6 win in the finals against GSU's Santa Ana and Valente.
Chevallier
took third place in the White Draw singles with a 6-0, 6-7 (6), 6-2 win vs.
Georgia Southern's Albert Codina Sala in the third-place match.
In
its first action of the 2012-13 season, the Panthers took on competition from
Arkansas, Kennesaw State, Mercer and South Carolina-Aiken. The 60th-ranked
Georgia State and 58th-ranked Arkansas were the two teams with
national rankings in the ITA-sanctioned tournament.
GSU,
led by first-year head coach Joerg Barthel, now prepares for the ITA Southeast
Regional Championships hosted by Florida State University beginning on Thursday,
