Rock Hill, S.C.--Senior Lucas Santa
Ana won the Division I Singles title and paired with junior Thomas Cook to take
home the Division II Doubles title at the Carolinas Invitational hosted by
Winthrop University last weekend.
Santa
Ana won the Division I Singles title with four singles victories on the weekend
and only went to three sets once, in the finals. He first defeated Campbell's
Fernando Guillen 7-5, 6-4 before knocking off Winthrop's Peter Nagovnak 6-1,
6-1. Santa Ana then advanced to face Vasily Eremeev of Tennessee Tech, which he
dispatched in two sets, 6-3, 6-3. He then came from behind to defeat South
Carolina's Harry Menzies 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the finals to claim the title.
Cook
dropped his first match in the same division as Santa Ana, but rallied with two
victories before falling in the consolation final. Cook defeated Gardner-Webb
freshman Nikita Zverkov 6-2, 6-2 prior to winning a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 match against
Yuta Hirokawa of Winthrop.
In
doubles, Santa Ana and Cook paired to win the Division II Doubles title. They
took down UNC Greensboro's Ahmet Sarioglu and Daniel Mack in the first round
8-5. The GSU duo next defeated Campbell's pair of David Clavera and Fernando
Guillen 8-6 in the semifinals. They finally took down Winthrop's Yuta Hirokawa
and Steven Patrick 8-2 to claim the title.
The
tournament concludes the fall slate for the Panthers as a team. Senior Victor
Valente will represent GSU at the prestigious USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate
Indoor Championships beginning on Nov. 8 in Flushing, N.Y. The tournament takes
place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the site of the
