ATLANTA — Following on the heels of a successful cross country season, the Georgia State track and field teams will have a chance to compete when they open the indoor schedule with a trip to the Orange and Purple Winter Classic in Clemson, S.C. on Saturday, Dec. 1.

Hosted by Clemson University at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex, the meet will run all day Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

The track events kick off with the men’s pentathlon competition at 10 a.m., with the first field event is the men’s pole vault scheduled for 11 a.m.

The Panthers also started the last indoor track and field season at the same meet. Niamh Kearney was the top-GSU competitor at the meet with a third-place finish in the 1,000m.

GSU had a number of season-best marks at the 2012 Winter Classic, including the women’s 300m (41.85), 500m (1:22.31), 1,000m (3:03.44) and the men’s 500m (1:14.60) and 1,000m (2:38.97).

Georgia State cross country also began the 2012 season at a meet hosted by Clemson. The Panthers captured the 2012 women’s Sun Belt cross country championship back on Oct. 27.

The women’s track and field team placed third in last season’s CAA outdoor championship after taking the conference title at the 2011 meet. GSU track and field will compete in the Sun Belt for the first time this season.

The Clemson meet is the only track and field competition run by the Panthers during the 2012 calendar year. GSU will return to action in 2013, starting with the UAB Blazer Invite on Jan 10-11 in Birmingham, Ala.
