ATLANTA — Georgia State track and field returns to action after winter break by traveling to Birmingham, Ala. for the 2013 UAB Invite on Jan. 10-11.

Hosted by the Blazers, the meet is being held at the newly-constructed Birmingham CrossPlex. This marks one of two meets the Panthers will compete in at the CrossPlex during the 2013 Indoor Track season, after traveling to Birmingham three times last season.

The lone events on Thursday are the women’s and men’s 5,000m, which will start at 8:00 p.m. ET. The remainder of events will take place on Friday, beginning with the women’s mile at 8:00 a.m. See the link to the meet information for a full schedule of events.

At the 2012 UAB Invite, GSU had a total of seven student-athletes place in the top-10 of their respective events. Georgia State was paced by a pair of third-place finishes from Jennifer Rubel in the women’s 5,000m and Chris Harper in the men’s mile.

The Panthers opened the 2013 indoor season with a successful showing at Clemson’s Orange and Purple Winter Classic. Rubel won the 3,000m, while Niamh Kearney took first place in the 1,000m. GSU also had three individuals finish second in their respective events.

Georgia State track and field will compete in the Sun Belt for the first time this season, beginning with the conference indoor championship on Feb. 24-25 in Jonesboro, Ark.

Both Rubel and Kearney earned All-Sun Belt honors for the GSU during the 2012 cross country season, when the Panthers captured the women’s conference championship.
