ATLANTA — After opening the season on the road, Georgia State softball (1-3) returns to the Heck Softball Complex to host the 10th annual Panther Invitational on Feb. 16-17.

The Panthers have hosted at least one home tournament for 15 consecutive years dating back to 1999. These tournaments have all been held at the Heck Softball Complex located in Panthersville, Ga.

Northern Kentucky, Oakland and Presbyterian College travel to Panthersville to participate in the 2013 Panther Invite.

Between the three opponents, GSU has only played one game against Oakland in 2006, which the Panthers won 3-1. The games against Northern Kentucky and Presbyterian will both be first-time meetings.

This season marks the first season of NCAA Division I competition for Northern Kentucky softball, who earned a bid to the Division II tournament as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2012.

The Panther Invitational will be the season-opener for both Northern Kentucky and Oakland. Presbyterian started the season 1-4 at the Fast Pitch Classic in Charlotte, N.C. The Blue Hose opened with a 5-3 win over Wisconsin, before losing to Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Charlotte twice.

Georgia State started the season in Starkville, Miss. at the Bulldog Kickoff Classic, where the Panthers managed a 10-9 victory against SIUE to go with losses to Troy, host Mississippi State and South Alabama. The Panthers trailed SIUE 9-3 in the fourth inning before mounting a comeback.

GSU was scheduled to play two more games against SIUE and Tennessee State, but the final day of the tournament was rained out and all remaining game were canceled.

Outfielder Ashley Christy was named to the All-Tournament team after registering three hits including a double, walking three times, scoring four runs, driving in three more runs and stealing a base.

Kaitlyn Medlam (1-2) picked up the lone win in the circle for GSU. Medlam sports a 3.07 ERA in 13.2 innings pitched to go with eight strikeouts.

Last season during the Panther Invitational, Georgia State went 3-0 with wins over Chattanooga, Eastern Illinois and IUPUI. The Panthers allowed only one run during the stretch and recorded two shutouts.
