ATLANTA—After winning two singles matches last week to run his record to 13-3 this season, Georgia State men’s tennis senior Victor Valente earned the Sun Belt Men’s Tennis Player of the Week award on Wednesday.

Valente began his week with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Florida Atlantic’s Jose Fantova to help Georgia State (9-8) earn its first Sun Belt Conference victory of the season against the Owls by a 4-2 margin. Valente then capped the week with a 7-6, 6-3 win against No. 65 Miami’s Gabriel Flores. Both of Valente’s victories came in the No. 1 singles position.

The senior is ranked in both of the latest ITA National Singles and Doubles rankings this week. He is ranked No. 107 in the singles rankings and No. 38 in the doubles rankings with senior Lucas Santa Ana. Valente is now 13-3 in singles play on the season with all 13 of his victories coming in straight sets. He is also 12-0 in doubles play with Santa Ana playing in the No. 1 and 2 slots.

The senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, also won the Sun Belt Player of the Week award on Mar. 6. He earned the award after setting a school record in doubles play with Santa Ana. The duo knocked off the No. 3-ranked tandem in the ITA National Doubles rankings in Georgia Tech’s Juan Spir and Vikram Hundal. The win was their first over a nationally-ranked opponent in their careers. The win was also the first doubles victory for a GSU team over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2009.

The Panthers, led by first-year head coach Joerg Barthel, return to action this weekend at the MTSU Shootout. Georgia State earned the third seed in the tournament and take on sixth-seeded Illinois State on Saturday at Noon.
