Menís Tennis jumps to No. 71, Valente to No. 64
ATLANTA—The Georgia State men’s tennis team leapt to No. 71 in the latest ITA National Team rankings and senior Victor Valente climbed to No. 64 in the latest ITA National Singles list released on Tuesday afternoon.
Georgia State (15-10) jumped back into the team rankings following an upset victory over No. 49-ranked MTSU in the Sun Belt Conference Championship final. The 4-3 comeback win secured a berth for Georgia State, led by first-year head coach Joerg Barthel, in the 2013 NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament as an automatic qualifier.
Senior Victor Valente dominated en route to earning All-Sun Belt First Team Singles, First Team Doubles and All-Tournament Team honors last weekend. Valente jumped to No. 64 after he upset the previous No. 77-ranked player, South Alabama’s Daniel Leitner, last weekend. Valente defeated Leitner 6-4, 7-5 in the Sun Belt Championship semifinals before knocking off MTSU’s Ben Davis 6-3, 6-1 in the finals. He did not drop a set all year in conference singles play and finished the season a perfect 8-0 against Sun Belt opponents.
Valente’s ranking puts him in prime position to earn one of the 64 bids to the 2013 NCAA Men’s Singles Championship beginning on May 22. The tournament consists of 64 student-athletes with automatic qualifiers given to 14 conferences excluding the Sun Belt Conference. Automatic qualification into the singles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125.
For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences.
