ATLANTA – The reigning Sun Belt champions, the Georgia State men’s tennis team, will begin its 2013-14 season by hosting its first tournament of the fall season. The tournament will run Friday through Sunday and feature Georgia Southern, South Alabama and Nebraska.

The tournament will take place at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park.

The tournament has a unique format, with each team playing in four doubles matches and eight singles matches. Both the singles and doubles matches will be comprised of two flights – the white flight and the blue flight. The top four singles players on each team will play on the blue flight, while the bottom four will play on the white.

“This is our inaugural Fall Invitational event, and we are very excited to welcome renowned tennis programs such as Georgia Southern, Nebraska and South Alabama, for what I'm sure will be a weekend full of highly competitive matches,” tournament director and assistant coach Cesar Vargas said.

Friday’s matches begin at 9 a.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 8 a.m. Doubles play will begin each day, followed by the eight singles matches. A point system will be utilized to name a winner from each flight, with two-set wins awarded five points and three-set wins awarded four points.

“We are very excited to get a new year started,” head coach Joerg Barthel said. “We had a good year last year and we hope to build upon that this year. We are very young this year, but I also feel like we have good leadership. Our home tournament has three quality opponents and I hope we have early success.”

Admission is free to Piedmont Park. Parking is available at the SAGE Parking Facility at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Directions to Piedmont Park can be found here
