ATLANTA - It was a perfect fall day for the Georgia State men's tennis team to kick off their fall season. With hardly a cloud in the sky and the temperature in the mid-80s, the Panthers hosted South Alabama, Georgia Southern and Nebraska in Piedmont Park for the first of a three day tournament.

The Panthers fared well in the round robin tournament, winning five of their eight singles matches and going 3-5  in doubles on the first day.

The tournament has a unique format, with each team playing in four doubles matches and eight singles matches. Both the singles and doubles matches will be comprised of two flights – the white flight and the blue flight. The top four singles players on each team will play on the blue flight, while the bottom four will play on the white.

In the singles blue flight, freshman Jannis Koeke recorded a two set win over Georgia Southern's Oliver Webb. Freshman Eric Baum also picked up his first win at Georgia State in the blue flight with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

“Overall, for our first day in the fall, this was a good start for 2013-14 campaign," head coach Joerg Barthel said. "We definitely performed to my expectations of the level of how we want to compete and how we want to represent our program. All of newcomers represented our team in the way that we coaches want them to.”

Both of Georgia State’s doubles blue flights went 1-1.

Day two of the tournament is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon. However, there is a high chance of rain and thunderstorms predicted for Saturday afternoon. Please check back to GeorgiaStateSports.com for the most up to date information regarding the tournament.

Also be advised Music Midtown will be going on at the same time in Piedmont Park. Traffic will be heavier than usual.
