ATLANTA – Georgia State rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take the third frame Thursday night, but it was not enough as Georgia Southern took the match in four sets. The Eagles picked up the victory by a final of 22-25, 17-25, 28-26 and 21-25.

Head coach Sally Polhamus and the Panthers fall to 10-16 overall and 6-9 in the Sun Belt.

The Panthers battled back to make things interesting in the later stages, but the Eagles proved to be too much down the stretch. Eliza Zachary and Sydney Stroud led the way offensively with 28 combined kills. Stroud’s total of 12 kills was a season-high and topped her nine kills two weeks ago at Appalachian State.

Sophomore Sarah Renner dished out 41 assists to lead all setters. Georgia State had four players reach double figures in digs including Celeste Friesen and Renner with 21 and 14 respectively. Anna Rantala and Kaitlyn Dachs combined for 23 assists to help carry the Panther offense.

Behind Lauren Reichard and Katie Bange, Georgia Southern took it to the Panthers early in the match. The two combined for 21 kills and Cathrine Murray added nine kills to go with her five service aces.

Defensive specialist Alex Beecher led all defenders with 27 digs on the night. Setters Bange and Kendra Koetter teamed up to distribute 42 assists.

After clinching a spot in the conference tournament this past weekend, the Panthers will look to finish off the regular season on a winning note down in Statesboro. The Panthers meet the Eagles at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
