January 2017

Happy New Year Panther Family!

At the urging of Mike Holmes among others, I plan to write monthly updates to highlight the many exciting events occurring within the Department of Athletics. Many will highlight the great people who dedicate themselves to educating and leading our student-athletes, our student-athletes themselves, or detail topics of interest to the Georgia State Family.  Each will have a theme based on a quote or idea. This month’s quote is: “Show me your actions and I will show you what you believe.”

We are excited with Shawn Elliott and his staff taking the leadership of our football program. I am indebted to the job done by Coach Miles and his staff to take an infant program and give us a foundation to build our aspirational program. I look forward to the Panther Family meeting the coaches at our signing day event on February 1. Details on the event will follow soon.

Secondly, once again, our student-athletes performed very well in the classroom this fall by posting a GPA of 3.12. We graduated 29 student-athletes in December. We have a solid academic support program led by Brad Horton, Jessica Summey, Jesse Rapole, Ron Moses, Bree Hicken, and Travis Ballard. These unsung heroes put countless hours of mental and physical time investing in positively affecting our student-athletes and we are grateful for their professionalism.

Third, the transformational development otherwise known as GSU Stadium is nearing a reality. The next couple months involve identifying a contractor to take on the challenge of our first phase of construction with the ultimate goal of playing football in the stadium this fall. Once we are comfortable with the schedule, it will be full steam ahead. Look for many exciting opportunities to participate in many different ways. Brian Kelly and our external marketing staff are finalizing plans for a Fan Council. The Panther Athletic Club staff and board are aggressively pursuing development and engagement opportunities for people to participate.  Look for information during our pre-game PAC events at Saturday home basketball games.

Finally, I hope everyone shares my enthusiasm for the new Under Armour apparel.  I encourage everyone to visit our on-line merchandise store to update their GSU gear and wear it proudly.

I look forward to a great 2017!

Go Panthers!
