ATLANTA -- Georgia State's new head coach Shawn Elliott and his staff will take the field with the 2017 Panthers for the first time as the
program opens spring practice Monday with an 8:45 a.m. workout at the GSU Practice Complex.

"It's going to be our first opportunity to see our football team actually play football, and that's always fun," Elliott said. "You can say what
you want, but winter conditioning is not fun, it's work. Now it's time to go out there and use our mentality for football and tranform what we've
done over the last month-and-a-half to the practice field."

Monday's workout is the first of 15 spring sessions, continuning through the April 15 Spring Game (time and location to be announced.)

The Panthers return 52 letterwinners and 17 starters, including nine on offense and seven on defense, but everyone begins with a blank slate.

"It will be a 15 practices of competition, and then we'll determine who is first team and who is second team," Elliott said. I'm anxiously
awaiting to see who steps forward at each position.

"I'm looking for great effort," he continued. "I think that's the first thing we've got to instill, to always play with extreme effort and to be
smart football players. We'll develop them slowly because it's a new system, but we're looking for great effort and great concentration."

While spring football is the first opportunity for Elliott and his staff to work with this team, it's also the first time working together for
this coaching staff, which includes offensive coordinator Travis Trickett, formerly of Florida Atlantic, and defensive coordinator Nate Fuqua,
formerly at Wofford.

"It be will good to see our coaches communicate with each other on the practice field and see their coaching style when we actually go out there
and teach football. That's exciting for me," Elliott said.

As for the X's and O's, Elliott explained, "We're going to be a one-back offense. A lot of people label that a spread offense. For us, it's an
advantage offense - whatever formations we feel like we can take advantage of. But primarily you'll see us in a one-back set.

"Defensively we'll be an odd front. They'll be some situational changes, but primarily we will base out of the 3-4."

Georgia State football will play its first season in the new Georgia State Stadium in 2017, with the inaugural game scheduled for Thursday, Aug.
31 vs. Tennessee State. Season tickets are on sale now, beginning at $100.
