ATLANTA -- The Georgia State football team enjoyed a record-setting semester in the classroom with a 3.03 grade point average for the spring semester, the highest ever posted by the program in its eight seasons.
The football program's strong performance contributed to an all-time high 3.30 combined GPA for the Georgia State Department of Athletics.
In head coach Shawn Elliott's first semester, a record 61 Panthers earned academic honors with a grade point average of 3.0 of higher.
"We set a goal and we crushed it," said Elliott, who commended Georgia State's academic support staff, including Ron Moses, Jessica Summey and Brad Horton.
Junior tight end Jacob Nesmith was the team's top individual performer as he earned President's List recognition, Georgia State's highest academic distinction signifying a semester GPA of 4.0 or higher.
Twenty-nine Panthers earned Dean's List status with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and another 31 individuals made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The football program also celebrates 28 current and former student-athletes who completed graduation requirements, including current NFL player Wil Lutz of the New Orleans Saints and 2017 Washington Redskins draft pick Robert Davis. The roster of graduates also includes eight student-athletes who will play for the Panthers next fall.
