ATLANTA- The Georgia State men’s soccer team will open conference play at rival Georgia Southern Saturday night, facing the No. 1 team in the league at 7 p.m.

The Panthers are 7-4 this season and coming off a dominating 4-1 victory over UAB. This will be conference opening weekend for the rest of the league, with Georgia Southern facing Coastal Carolina in the lone Sun Belt match-up of the season.

Georgia State has the top scoring offense in the Sun Belt, outscoring its opponents 17-9. Senior Rashid Alarape continues to lead the Panthers in goals with seven, ranking 17th in the country and first in the league.

Freshman George Proctor scored his first career goal over UAB Tuesday, with Max Hemmings scoring twice including the game-winner. Hemmings is now tied for second on the team with three total goals.

The team has shutout four opponents this season, ranking first in the SBC and 29th in the country. Senior Yannic Horn also ranks first in the league with a .800 save percentage.

Georgia Southern is 5-4 this season, entering the rivalry match on a one-game winning streak. The team previously fell 2-1 to Mercer at home, a team that Georgia State defeated 2-0 in its regular-season opener.

This will be the 40th meeting between the two teams, with the Panthers holding a 24-10-5 advantage over the Eagles. Georgia State faced Georgia Southern twice last season, splitting the series with a regular season loss and a conference tournament victory.
