BOONE, NC- Georgia State volleyball won a five-set marathon match over Sun Belt rival Appalachian State Friday night in Boone. The Panthers bested to the Mountaineers in five sets, (21-25, 26-24, 25-20, 22-25, 22-20). The win was GSU’s eighth on the season.

The turning point in the match came late in the second set as the Mountaineers led 23-18. A kill by Sarah Renner would spark an 8-1 GSU run to give the Panthers a 26-24 set two win. Georgia State would control play in the third, cruising to a 25-20 win, before falling in the fourth set.

The Panthers would once again find their backs against the wall trailing 11-14 in set five. However, GSU showed great resiliency fighting to win a thrilling deciding set 22-20 and clinch the match.

"Coming back from down 11-14 was huge for us", said coach Sally Polhamus. "Playing with confidence and finishing that fifth set says so much about our growth as a team."

Crystal Lee was a force in all aspects of the game notching 17 kills and 14 digs. Renner would add 20 digs of her own and 39 assists for her first 20-20 match of the season. Džemila Hadžić racked up 16 digs, seven kills, and an ace.

Georgia State continued to get it done from the service line, totaling seven aces on the night. Celeste Friesen’s four aces were a game high, as were her 34 digs. Anna Rantala added two aces of her own. GSU now has 113 aces on the season.

The Panthers will to keep the momentum as they travel to Coastal Carolina. Georgia State and the Chanticleers will meet on the court at 12:30 Sunday in Conway.
