ATLANTA- Fresh off Wednesday’s five-set win in Statesboro, Georgia State will host Georgia Southern Saturday night with a chance to sweep the season series. The rivals will take to the court at the GSU Sports Arena at 6:00 p.m.
It will be a short turn around for the Panthers who prior to Wednesday had not played a mid week match on the year. Saturday will also mark the first time GSU has played the same team in back to back matches this season.
“Playing them on Wednesday allows us to come back and make tactical adjustments for our match on Saturday”, said Panther coach Sally Polhamus. “Facing a team back to back is really all about mental resilience and the ability to make changes from one match to the other.”
Saturday’s winner will take home a half-point in the Rivalry Series standings. Georgia State currently leads the competition 5.0-0.5. The winner will also put itself in great position to make the Sun Belt Tournament, as the Panthers, Eagles, and the Troy Trojans are all tied for the tournament’s eighth seed.
There will be plenty of fanfare surrounding the match as GSU volleyball welcomes back former players for Alumni Night. Saturday’s match will also be a PAC Attack night. Members of the Panther Athletic Club will have a table set up on the third floor concourse level beginning at 5:00 p.m. handing out GSU gear.
“It’s our last match of the year and it’s against our biggest rival”, said Polhamus. “We are hoping for a great crowd and a great energy in the arena that our team can feed off.”
