ARLINGTON, Texas – Taking on UT Arlington Saturday, Georgia State’s women’s basketball team was defeated 62-57 by the Mavericks at the College Park Center.

Georgia State tied the game twice in the final minutes, but the Mavericks held on to hand GSU the road loss.

Janessa Murphy’s 14 points led the Panthers on offense and the guard also added seven rebounds. Juliet James finished with a career-high 17 rebounds and Madison Newby missed a double-double by just one assist, totaling 13 points and nine assists.

The Panthers shot the ball well at 40%, but committed 18 turnovers. While Georgia State got six steals, UTA was more effective in converting turnovers into points, tallying 21 points off turnovers.

Georgia State trailed by seven with 5:45 left in the game when GSU went on a 7-0 run capped by Kierra Henry’s jumped that evened the score at 49-49. GSU got as close as three points in the final minute, but UTA knocked down its free throws to hang on.

Georgia State will close out the regular season next weekend in Atlanta as South Alabama and Troy come to town.
