With a bowl victory and a trip to March Madness in 2017-18, Georgia State's athletic program was ranked No. 1 in the Sun Belt and among the Top 25 Group of Five programs by CBS Sports.
CBS Sports rated every FBS school in three sports -- football, men's basketball and women's basketball -- along with two "wild cards" among the school's most successful spectator sports: baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, hockey and wrestling. The weighted formula puts 2.5 times as much emphasis on football compared to women's basketball and the "wild cards;" men's basketball is worth twice as many points.
Georgia State enjoyed a very successful 2017-18 year in its marquee sports as the football team earned its first bowl victory with a 27-17 win over Western Kentucky in the AutoNation Cure Bowl, and the men's basketball team won the Sun Belt Conference title and made its second trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last four years.
The Panthers ranked ahead of several programs in Power 5 conferences, including Ole Miss, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech.
