LATVIA – Georgia State men’s tennis incoming freshman Roberts Grinvalds capped a successful week at the Latvia F1 Futures Pro Circuit, reaching the quarterfinals in singles play and earning runner-up in doubles play on Friday.
The future Panther opened the week with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Daniel Soyfer in the first round of singles. He topped Ivan Liutarevich in the second round of singles play 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinal. Grinvalds fell in the quarterfinal to No. 1 seed Ronald Slobodchikov in a close third set.
In doubles play, Grinvalds paired up with fellow Latvian Rudolfs Mednis and took the victory in round one 4-6, 6-2 [10-3]. Grinvalds and Mednis beat their opponents 1-6, 6-4 [10-6] in the quarterfinal before a walkover in the semifinal moved the duo into the finals. There they fell 6-4, 3-6 [10-1] to Tadas Babelis and Kasparas Zemaitelis.
Grinvalds is one of three incoming freshmen that will join Georgia State in the fall, joining future teammates Patrick Lazo and Diego Padilha. The Panthers open their 2018 fall tournament slate on Sept. 21-23 at the Gamecock Fall Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
