ATLANTA -- Georgia State head coach Shawn Elliott had mixed emotions after the Panthers' first scrimmage of the preseason, held Saturday morning at Georgia State Stadium.

The Panthers ran more than 100 plays in the scrimmage while working three teams as they continue preparations for their season opener vs. Kennesaw State. Georgia State hosts the Owls on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at Georgia State Stadium in a game that will air on ESPN+.

Elliott was positive about the performance of the GSU offense but less than pleased with the defense.

"Offensively, we moved the ball well," he said. "I thought our quarterbacks played pretty well, and I saw good things from our backs. And that's with our entire second offensive line either redshirt freshmen or true freshmen, so that's encouraging.

"All in all, we're still trying to find ourselves as a football team," Elliott added. "We'll find out as we watch the film and move towards our next practice Monday."

Competition continues at the quarterback position among junior Aaron Winchester and junior college transfer Dan Ellington, along with redshirt freshman Jack Walker and senior Jaquez Parks.

Winchester, Ellington and Walker all had touchdown runs in the scrimmage, along with junior running back Tra Barnett, who broke a 55-yard scoring run. Juniors Devin Gentry and Christian Owens, the South Carolina transfer who sat out last season, caught touchdown passes.

At running back, the GSU coaches are taking a look at three highly-regarded true freshmen--Destin Coates, Dawson Hill and Seth Paige--along with the returnees.

The Panthers will take Sunday off and the return to the practice field Monday morning.

Season tickets for Georgia State's six-game home schedule at GSU Stadium begin as low as $100. Single-game tickets range from $20 to $25 per game, while group ticket packages are available for groups of 10 more ranging from $10 to $15 per game.
