MOBILE, Ala. – Sophomore Chloe Howard shot an opening round 73 to lead the Georgia State women’s golf team in round one of the USA Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Crossings Course on Saturday.

The Panthers shot an opening day 16-over 304 to sit in 15th place with 36 holes to play.

Howard made three birdies in the first round of the year and sits in a tie for 29th entering the second round on Sunday.

“We got off to a little bit of a tough start this morning, but I like how the team bounced back and eliminated any big numbers on our second nine,” head coach Cathy Mant said. “We know we have a relatively young team and with that, there are going to be some mistakes. However, we need to learn from them and use that knowledge in the next two rounds.”

Making her Georgia State debut, freshman Emma Berlin added a 2-over 74 and stands in a tie for 34th. Junior Harmanprit Kaur is tied for 67th following a 6-over 78 on Saturday.

Freshman Maria Blasco opened play with a 7-over 79 and is tied for 75th, while sophomore Petra Duran is in 92nd-place following a 13-over 85 in the opening round.

Cal Baptist shot a 6-under 282 to open a four-stroke lead following the first round. South Florida stands in second-place at 2-under par, with Tulane and South Alabama tied for third at 1-over par. Lamar and Western Kentucky are tied for fifth place at 2-over par.

Stetson’s Hanna Kiefer opened play with a 4-under 68 to lead the field by one stroke. Houston Baptist’s Kaity Cummings, Little Rock’s Emelie Blennow, and Western Kentucky’s Bailey Tyree are tied for second place at 3-under par. A group of seven golfers is tied for fifth at 2-under par.

The field will utilize tee times again on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. ET off Holes No. 1 and No. 10.
