ATLANTA – The defending Sun Belt Champions Georgia State men’s soccer team will kick off its 2019 spring exhibition slate this weekend, the first of five scheduled contests that the Panthers will compete in over the coming months.
“It feels like it’s been a long time since we last took the field,” reigning Sun Belt Coach of the Year Brett Surrency said. “So everyone is definitely itching to go.”
Georgia State will begin the spring season 6 p.m. Saturday against UAB at the GSU Soccer Complex. The Panthers then play their next three matches on the road, traveling to face Mercer on Feb. 22 in Peachtree City, Ga., taking on the Chattanooga Red Wolves of USL League One on March 2 and facing Furman on March 30.
GSU will return home for its final exhibition match of the spring on April 13 where it will host Presbyterian at the GSU Soccer Complex.
The Panthers return to the pitch after a historic 2018 season, winning the Sun Belt Conference double for the first time in school history and earning the program’s second ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. GSU also strung together six straight victories for the first time in over 30 years during the season.
While Surrency loses eight seniors from last year’s championship squad, he currently has an incoming class of five talented individuals ready to contribute. True freshman Ross Finnie and Presbyterian transfer Andrew Miller-Bell both joined the team this spring and are making their mark in their first semester with the Panthers.
“We have a lot of returning players from last year’s team, but those guys will have to take on bigger roles than they did in the fall,” Surrency said. “For me that’s what’s fun about college sports is the cyclical nature in it. You see a great group of seniors move along to the next phase of their life and you hope that the younger guys are ready to step up and assume new responsibilities. Overall, I believe spring will be a great learning experience for us this year.”
All Georgia State men’s soccer spring home matches will be held at the GSU Soccer Complex, located at 2401 Wildcat Rd., Decatur, GA 30034. Admittance and parking will be free of charge.
