ATLANTA – Georgia State women’s soccer kicks off its 2019 spring exhibition schedule this weekend, the first of six arranged matches that the Panthers will compete in over the next few months.
“The girls have had a great start to the spring,” GSU head coach Ed Joyce said. “The work rate on the pitch and in the weight room has been top notch and they are very excited to get our spring schedule rolling. We have setup a challenging schedule that will help us learn a lot about our group.”
GSU opens the spring season 1 p.m. Sunday against Georgia Gwinnett College at the Grizzly Soccer Complex in Lawrenceville, Ga. The Panthers will then return home for a round-robin contest with Jacksonville State and West Georgia on March 2, followed by their final home match of the spring on March 8 against Kennesaw State.
Georgia State will round out the spring with road contests against two power-five opponents who made last year’s NCAA Tournament in Auburn and Clemson. GSU takes on Auburn March 30 and Clemson April 13.
The Panthers will look to carry momentum from a strong finish to the 2018 campaign into the spring season. Joyce and his staff led GSU to its first Sun Belt Conference Tournament appearance since 2015 last year, finishing 6-1-1 in the last eight matches. He also guided the blue and white to four consecutive conference victories in the month of October, a feat that the program hadn’t accomplished in 14 years.
While Joyce loses four seniors and a few transfers from last year’s squad, he has built a strong incoming class that currently includes nine newcomers. Mississippi State transfer Liz Fogarty and West Virginia transfer Ashley Triplett have both joined the team this spring, each showing promise in their first semester with the Panthers.
“I think the biggest difference is that this year’s group has been lifted by the fantastic end we had to the fall season,” Joyce said. “They all came into the spring season very fit and excited to keep driving the program forward. Adding two players mid-year from power-five programs has really helped us raise the level of competition within training. Both Liz and Ashley have assimilated very well into the team. We are excited to track their progress moving forward.”
All Georgia State women’s soccer spring home matches will be held at the GSU Soccer Complex, located at 2401 Wildcat Rd., Decatur, GA 30034. Admittance and parking will be free of charge.
