ATLANTA - Georgia State welcomed new men’s basketball head coach Rob Lanier and his family into the Panther Family on Tuesday at an introductory press conference and welcome reception at Georgia State Stadium.
“Change is an awesome opportunity,” Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb said. “It comes with a lot of courage and throughout this process, President Mark Becker and I talked a lot that one of the keys for us was to find a basketball coach that could help our guys not only develop as players but also help you guys develop as young men. And without question were pretty excited about Rob Lanier and his family joining the Panther staff.”
Lanier has spent the last four seasons as associate head coach at Tennessee. The Volunteers finished the 2018-19 season 31-6, advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The season included a win over the No. 1 team in the nation and a No. 1 national ranking for the Volunteers.
“People have always said to me do you want to be a head coach again what would it take for you to leave Tennessee, and in my effort to describe that the best I could come up with is ‘I’m gonna know it when I see it’ and last Monday within 15 minutes of sitting down with Charlie, and Dr. Becker, I saw what I was looking for. I saw energy, aggressiveness, and a vision that matched my own. I know we are in a great conference, and we have a winning program, but I want more.”
Lanier will complete his staff and start signing the next class of Panthers within the coming weeks.
